The PGWP is an open work permit that can allow eligible international graduates of participating Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to gain Canadian work experience after completing an eligible program.

PGWP eligibility is assessed against several requirements. Completing studies in Canada does not by itself guarantee a work permit.

For applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, most graduates must prove English or French language ability. Flight-school graduates who qualify under the specific flight-school exemption do not have the new language requirement.

The field-of-study requirement applies to many non-degree programs. It does not apply to graduates of bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees, and it does not apply in the other specific exceptions set out by IRCC.

Canadian work experience can strengthen a graduate's future immigration options, but a PGWP does not itself guarantee permanent residence.
