A visitor record controls how long you may stay

A Canadian visitor record is an official document issued by an immigration officer to extend or change the conditions of a temporary resident's stay in Canada. It is a status document — not a visa.
It extends your stayIf you are already in Canada and need more time as a visitor, you normally apply before your current authorized stay expires.
It shows an expiry dateThe visitor record states the date by which you must leave Canada and may list conditions attached to your stay.
It is not an entry documentA visitor record does not by itself give you the right to re-enter Canada after travelling outside Canada.
It can change conditionsIn eligible cases, the application can be used to request a change or extension of temporary resident status.
Most visitors start with up to 6 monthsThe normal period can be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances and what an officer authorizes.
Conditions still matterYou must respect visitor conditions, including restrictions on work or study unless separately authorized.
Key distinction: A visitor record lets you remain in Canada longer; it does not replace a TRV or eTA needed for re-entry where applicable.

05

Who should consider a visitor record?

A visitor record is generally for a person who is already in Canada and needs to extend their authorized temporary stay or change the conditions of that stay.
Visitors approaching expiryApply when your authorized period in Canada is ending and you have a genuine reason to remain longer.
Visa-exempt visitorsEven if you did not need a TRV to enter Canada, you still need to maintain legal temporary resident status.
Family visitorsPeople visiting relatives or friends may request more time when the circumstances support a longer temporary stay.
Medical or personal reasonsA longer stay may be considered where there is a documented temporary reason and a credible plan.
Short-term visitors with changed plansChanged travel arrangements can justify an extension when the applicant remains a genuine temporary resident.
Applicants with other temporary statusSome people may need a different application or permit instead of a visitor record; the correct status must be assessed before filing.

Core question IRCC will assess

The file should clearly explain why the applicant needs additional time, how the stay will be supported financially, where the person will stay, and why the temporary nature of the stay remains credible.

Do not use a visitor record as a substitute for a work or study permit. If the real purpose has changed, the correct authorization should be assessed first.

06

Know exactly when your status expires

The most important date in a visitor record case is the date your current temporary resident status ends. The extension strategy should be built around that date.
Passport stampIf an officer stamped your passport with a departure date, that date can control your authorized stay.
Visitor recordIf you were issued a visitor record, use the expiry date shown on that document.
No stamp or recordIn many cases, a visitor may stay up to 6 months from entry, or until passport expiry if earlier, subject to the applicable rules.
Apply before expiryIRCC says you must apply before your current status expires if you want maintained status while the extension is processed.
30-day planning ruleIRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before status expiry where possible. Earlier preparation gives more time to correct gaps.
Keep evidenceSave the submission confirmation, payment receipt, application copy and supporting documents for your records.
Do not wait for the last day. A late application can become a restoration case, which is legally different from a normal extension.

07

A strong extension explains the change in circumstances

An extension is not automatic. The application should demonstrate that the applicant continues to meet the requirements of temporary residence and has a credible reason for the requested additional time.
Genuine temporary purposeExplain why more time is needed and what the applicant will do during the additional stay.
Financial capacityShow sufficient funds for accommodation, food, transportation and other expected expenses for the extended period.
AccommodationProvide a clear address and, where relevant, evidence of the host or accommodation arrangement.
Home-country tiesWhere relevant, explain employment, business, family, property, studies or other commitments supporting a temporary stay.
Immigration historyDisclose previous applications, refusals, overstays or status issues accurately and explain them where necessary.
ConsistencyThe extension request should match the applicant's entry history, previous statements, documents and requested period.

What can weaken the case?

Vague reasons, unsupported financial claims, an unexplained long extension, inconsistent dates, missing status evidence, or a request that appears to be covering an undeclared work/study purpose can create concerns.

Final decisions remain with IRCC. Supporting evidence should be tailored to the applicant's actual circumstances.

09

IMM 5708 is the core application form

The current application form is IMM 5708 — Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor or Temporary Resident Permit Holder.
Application typeIndicate whether you are extending visitor status, applying for a temporary resident permit or restoring visitor status, as applicable.
Identity & UCIUse the correct UCI and make sure the name, date of birth, passport and citizenship details match the identity documents.
Current statusReport your current immigration status and the dates associated with it accurately.
Entry historyRecord your first entry, most recent entry, place of entry and the relevant document number when required.
Reason for extensionChoose the applicable reason and explain the request clearly, including the period you are seeking.
Funds & host detailsProvide the requested financial amount and details of the person or institution you intend to visit, where applicable.
Form quality matters: Incomplete, inconsistent or inaccurate answers can create delays or credibility concerns. Validate the form and review every answer against the supporting documents.

10

Build the file around the actual reason for the extension

The exact checklist varies by applicant. The following is a practical preparation framework and does not replace the personalized IRCC checklist.
IdentityPassport bio page and relevant pages showing status, stamps, visas or travel history.
Current statusCurrent visitor record, passport stamp, entry evidence or other proof showing when authorized stay expires.
IMM 5708Completed application form, validated where applicable, with accurate answers and signatures where required.
Financial evidenceRecent bank statements, income evidence, sponsor/host support and other proof appropriate to the requested stay.
Purpose evidenceInvitation, medical documentation, family circumstances, itinerary, accommodation or other documents supporting the stated reason.
Explanation letterA concise letter tying the reason, requested dates, finances, accommodation and temporary plan together.
Travel historyRelevant visas, stamps and prior immigration decisions where they help explain the case.
Family / host evidenceRelationship evidence and host information where the request is based on visiting family or friends.

Use the personalized IRCC checklist as the controlling document list. Additional documents may be appropriate depending on the facts.

11

Show how the extended stay will actually be funded

A visitor record request should make it easy for an officer to understand who will pay for the additional stay and whether the proposed period is financially realistic.
Applicant fundsShow accessible funds that are consistent with the applicant's income, savings and stated circumstances.
Host or family supportIf someone else is paying, explain the relationship, support offered and evidence of the supporter’s capacity.
Accommodation costsClarify whether the applicant will stay with family, in paid accommodation or another arrangement.
Medical or special expensesWhere the reason involves medical or other exceptional circumstances, document the expected costs and arrangements.
Requested durationThe period requested should be proportionate to the reason for the extension and supported by the evidence.
Return planExplain what the applicant will do after the requested stay and preserve evidence supporting the temporary nature of the visit.
Avoid unexplained numbers. Large recent deposits, inconsistent income, or funds that do not match the stated source should be explained rather than left unexplained.

The evidence should be truthful, current and traceable. IRCC may request additional documents if clarification is needed.

12

Apply before expiry to stay legally while IRCC decides

If you apply to extend your stay before your current temporary resident status expires, IRCC says you can legally remain in Canada until a decision is made. This is commonly referred to as maintained status.
Application must be timelyIRCC must receive the extension request before the current temporary status expires.
Stay in CanadaFor the visitor extension itself, remaining in Canada while the application is processed is the safest way to preserve the intended status strategy.
Same visitor conditionsMaintained status does not turn a visitor into a worker or student. Existing visitor conditions continue to matter.
Keep proofRetain the submission confirmation and evidence showing the application was submitted before expiry.
Watch other documentsProvincial or federal documents may have their own expiry and renewal rules while an extension is pending.
Do not confuse with approvalMaintained status means the person can remain while the application is pending; it does not mean the new visitor record has already been approved.
Critical: If you leave Canada while relying on maintained status, travel and re-entry consequences must be assessed separately. A visitor record is not a re-entry document.

Official source: IRCC — Visitor record: After you apply.

13

If status has already expired, the case changes

A person who remained in Canada beyond the authorized period may, in some circumstances, request restoration of visitor status. Restoration is not the same as a normal extension.
90-day windowFor visitor restoration, IRCC states that restoration may be possible when less than 90 days have passed since visitor status expired, subject to the applicable requirements.
Explain the overstayIMM 5708 requires details about the circumstances and why the person remained longer than authorized.
Pay restoration feesThe current restoration fee for restoring visitor status is CAD $246.25. A visitor visa fee is not required for restoration of visitor status. Verify fees before filing because IRCC can change them.
No automatic approvalMeeting the timing window does not guarantee restoration. The applicant must still satisfy the applicable requirements.
Do not continue unauthorized activityLoss of status can affect the ability to work or study. The person should not assume previous authorization continues.
Act immediatelyOnce status has expired, the file should be assessed promptly rather than waiting for the 90-day window to approach.
Restoration is a higher-risk situation. The explanation, chronology and supporting evidence should be reviewed carefully before submission.

14

A visitor record does not guarantee re-entry

A visitor record proves temporary resident status in Canada and sets the period you may remain. It does not itself give you a right to leave Canada and return.
Leaving CanadaBefore travelling, check whether you have the required entry document for your next return to Canada.
Visa-required travellerIf you require a visitor visa, you generally need a valid TRV to return, subject to limited exceptions.
eTA travellerIf you are visa-exempt and returning by air, you may need a valid eTA and must still meet entry requirements.
U.S. travelSpecial rules can apply to direct returns from the United States or Saint Pierre and Miquelon; assess the exact travel history.
Border decisionA valid document does not guarantee admission. A border services officer makes the decision at the port of entry.
Maintained status + travelDo not assume that an extension application gives the same protection after you leave Canada.
Before booking travel: verify the passport, TRV/eTA requirements, current status, and the consequences of leaving while an extension or restoration application is pending.

Official source: IRCC — Visitor record: Travelling outside Canada.

15

Once the decision arrives, check the document carefully

If approved, IRCC says the visitor record is mailed after the decision. The new expiry date is the deadline for leaving Canada unless another lawful status applies.
Check the expiry dateConfirm the new date and make sure it matches the period you expected.
Check conditionsRead all conditions printed on the visitor record and comply with them throughout the stay.
Plan departureKeep a realistic travel plan and evidence of compliance for future Canadian applications.
Do not overstay againIf another extension is needed, prepare early and apply before the current status expires; IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before expiry where possible.
Keep the full fileRetain the application, documents, submission confirmation, correspondence and issued visitor record.
Think aheadIf the applicant intends to work, study or pursue another immigration pathway, assess the correct authorization rather than relying on visitor status.

Common mistakes to avoid

Applying too late; using the wrong status application; requesting an unsupported period; weak financial evidence; inconsistent dates; incomplete IMM 5708 answers; unexplained prior refusals or overstays; and treating a visitor record as a visa.

A strong visitor-record application is a clear, evidence-backed explanation of why additional time in Canada is justified and how the applicant will remain compliant.
