Band 7

๐ŸŽง
Section 1
Listening Strategies
40 questions ยท 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time
โšก Top 5 Strategies
  • Read questions before the audio begins โ€” predict the answer type
  • Follow the recording order โ€” answers come in sequence
  • Write exactly what you hear; don't paraphrase for gap fills
  • Check word count instructions (e.g. "No more than TWO words")
  • Transfer carefully โ€” check spelling during the 10-minute window

Map & Plan Labelling Tips

Before the Audio
  • Study the map: identify compass directions (N/S/E/W)
  • Note all labeled landmarks already on the map
  • Predict location vocabulary: opposite, adjacent, beside, between
During the Audio
  • Track speaker's movement using directional phrases
  • Key phrases: "turn left at...", "on your right...", "next to..."
  • Don't panic if you miss one โ€” move to the next quickly

Pro Tip: Section 4 (Academic Monologue)

This is the hardest section โ€” no break in the middle. Focus on headings and subheadings in the question paper to track where you are. Academic vocabulary is dense; underlining keywords before listening is critical.

Section 2
Reading Strategies
40 questions ยท 60 minutes ยท 3 long passages

Skimming vs Scanning

Skimming (Getting the Gist)
  • Read the title, subtitle, and first sentence of each paragraph
  • Use for: understanding the overall topic & structure
  • Time: ~2 minutes per passage

True / False / Not Given Strategy

The Golden Rule
  • TRUE: Statement matches the text exactly (may use synonyms)
  • FALSE: Statement directly contradicts the text
  • NOT GIVEN: Information is simply not in the passage
  • If you can't find it โ€” it's likely NOT GIVEN
  • Don't use outside knowledge โ€” only what's in the passage
  • Beware of "partly true" statements โ€” check the WHOLE claim

Keyword Spotting Technique

Step 1

Underline keywords in the question โ€” nouns, verbs, specific numbers

Step 2

Find synonyms โ€” questions rarely use the exact same words as the text

Step 3

Locate the paragraph, then read in detail only that section

Time Management Formula

  • Passage 1 (easiest) โ†’ 15 minutes
  • Passage 2 (medium) โ†’ 20 minutes
  • Passage 3 (hardest) โ†’ 25 minutes
  • If stuck on a question โ€” skip and come back. Never spend more than 90 seconds on one question.

Speaking Strategies
11โ€“14 minutes ยท 3 parts ยท 25% of total score
Part 1 โ€” Introduction (4โ€“5 min)
  • Give extended answers โ€” never Yes/No alone

Natural Filler Phrases (Use These!)

That's an interesting question... Well, I would say... Let me think about that... It depends, really... From my perspective... To be honest... What I mean is... In my experience...

Pronunciation Tips

Do This

  • Stress important content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives)
  • Link words naturally: "I am" โ†’ "I'm", "going to" โ†’ "gonna"
  • Use rising intonation for questions, falling for statements
Avoid This
  • Memorised speeches โ€” examiners penalise rehearsed answers
  • Repeating the question back word-for-word
  • Long silences โ€” use fillers instead
  • Whispering or trailing off at the end of sentences
