  • Hungary's immigration authority requires evidence that the student has sufficient resources for subsistence, accommodation, return/onward travel and healthcare.
  • Acceptable evidence can include bank balances/transactions, family support backed by evidence of the sponsor's ability to support the student, regular income documents or credible scholarship evidence.
  • The authority may request additional documents. A strong file should show a realistic and traceable funding plan rather than relying on a single unexplained balance.

Stipendium Hungaricum — 2026/27

2026/27 status — CLOSED: The 2026/27 Stipendium Hungaricum call offered tuition-free education, a monthly stipend, accommodation support, medical insurance and a student ID. The complete-application deadline was 15 January 2026 at 2 p.m. CET. As of 21 August 2026, that cycle is closed. Check the official programme website for the next call when announced.
Tuition-free educationExemption from tuition fees for eligible scholarship holders under the programme rules.
Monthly stipendFor BA/BSc, MA/MSc, one-tier master’s and non-degree programmes, the 2026/27 call provided HUF 43,700/month as a contribution to living costs.

07 · HUNGARY STUDENT RESIDENCE & D VISA

Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies

For third-country nationals staying in Hungary for more than 90 days, the relevant route is generally the residence permit for the purpose of studies. Where a visa is required for entry, the residence-permit application submitted abroad also serves as the basis for the entry visa; an approved applicant receives a type D visa to enter and collect the residence permit.

Mission-specific rule: Application location, appointment method, fees and document handling depend on nationality and lawful place of residence. Check the competent Hungarian diplomatic mission before booking or submitting.
Timing note: OIF states a 15-day procedural-administration period and says the authority adopts a merits decision within 60 days. Missing-document and other procedural periods can affect the practical timeline. Do not market 15 days as a guaranteed visa or residence approval time.

English-taught programmesEnglish proficiency requirements are programme-specific. The institution may accept a specified test, prior education in English or another recognised form of evidence.

Work during studies

During the study periodThird-country nationals holding the relevant study residence permit may work for a maximum of 30 hours per week during their study period.
Outside the study periodFull-time employment is permitted for a maximum of 90 days in a year under the current OIF framework.

After graduation

Job-search / business-start route: A student who has successfully completed studies and whose intended job or business matches the level of the completed studies may apply in Hungary for a residence permit for seeking a job or starting a business.
Maximum validity: 9 monthsThe permit cannot be extended. OIF states that the application must be submitted in Hungary at least 15 days before the study/research residence permit expires, using the Enter Hungary platform.
Important: A post-study permit is not an automatic permanent-residence or employment guarantee. The graduate must qualify for the subsequent residence route and employment/business conditions that apply.

11 · FAMILY OPTIONS & REFUSAL SUPPORT

Family planning should be assessed separately from the student's study route.

Family reunification — current ruleThe current OIF study factsheet states that a third-country national holding or applying for a residence permit for the purpose of studies is not eligible for a residence permit for family reunification, subject to the specific exception stated by the authority for a child born in Hungary during the study permit period.
Family travel is differentA spouse or child may have other lawful travel or residence options depending on nationality, purpose and circumstances. These are separate from the student's study residence permit and must be assessed independently.
Do not promise a family pathway based only on the student's admission. The Stipendium Hungaricum programme also notes that it does not provide visa, administrative services or additional financial support for family members or accompanying persons.
