Sweden is a strong destination for international students seeking research-led education, English-taught programmes, innovation and a highly international study environment. For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students, the admission, tuition and residence-permit process must be planned together.

For accompanying family in 2026, the current additional maintenance amounts are SEK 4,440/month for a spouse/cohabiting partner and SEK 2,664/month per child.
Swedish universities and external organisations offer scholarships with their own eligibility rules and deadlines. Some scholarships cover tuition, while others may also contribute to living expenses. The student must check the exact scholarship terms.

Students who find qualifying employment may be able to apply for a work permit from within Sweden if they meet the current requirements, including having completed higher education equivalent to at least two semesters. The exact work-permit conditions should be checked at the time of application.
For higher-education studies lasting more than three months, non-EU/EEA students generally need a Swedish residence permit, and it must be issued before travel.
The current maintenance requirement is SEK 10,656 per month for applications made in 2026, with specified reductions where qualifying free food or housing is provided.
The current University Admissions application fee is SEK 900 per semester for applicants who are required to pay it.
The current fee is SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children under 18.
For first-/second-cycle students whose permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026, the general limit is 15 hours per week during semesters. June, July and August are not subject to that weekly limitation. Specific educational/institutional work exceptions also apply.
Eligible graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work or explore starting a business. For completed higher education at first-/second-cycle level, the permit can be granted for up to one year, subject to the current requirements.
Eligible spouses/partners and children under 18 can apply under the student-family route, subject to relationship, passport, permit-duration and maintenance requirements.
For permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, the current acceptable-progress rule for full-time university studies is at least 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits in each subsequent year. Insufficient progress can affect an extension or lead to other permit consequences.
