What is an Express Entry draw?

An Express Entry draw is when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites candidates from the Express Entry pool to apply for permanent residence. Draws happen roughly every two weeks. Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application. The lowest CRS score to receive an ITA in each draw is called the 'cutoff score'.

What CRS score do I need for an ITA?

There is no fixed minimum CRS score — it varies with each draw. General (No Limits) draws have recently had cutoffs around 524–527, while Canadian Experience Class draws tend to sit slightly higher at 534–541. Category-based draws have significantly lower cutoffs: Healthcare draws have cleared at 436, STEM at 491, French Language Proficiency at 379, and Trade Occupations at 430. If you qualify for a category, your effective eligibility threshold can be hundreds of points lower.

What are category-based draws?

Introduced in 2023, category-based draws allow IRCC to target specific occupations, language groups, or other priorities instead of simply inviting the highest-CRS candidates. Categories currently include Healthcare, STEM Occupations, French Language Proficiency, Trade Occupations, Agriculture & Agri-food, and Transport. Candidates who meet a category's criteria are placed in a separate sub-pool and compete only against each other, dramatically lowering the effective cutoff score.

The most impactful levers are: (1) Language scores — retaking IELTS or TEF Canada to push into a higher CLB band can add 30–80+ points. (2) A job offer from a Canadian employer adds 50 or 200 points depending on the NOC TEER level. (3) A provincial nomination adds 600 points, making an ITA nearly certain. (4) Completing a second official language (French) can unlock bonus points and eligibility for French category draws with much lower cutoffs.
