About the New Zealand Visitor Visa
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) issues visitor visas under Section 49 of the Immigration Act 2009. Indian passport holders need a visitor visa before travelling.
Applications are submitted online via the INZ portal or paper-based via VFS NZ centres. Decisions follow the Bona Fide Applicant Test (Instruction E5.1) similar to Australia's GTE.
Visitor visa allows up to 9 months stay in any 18-month period. Multi-entry validity is granted to applicants with strong travel & financial profiles.

Partner of a Worker / Student Visitor
For partners of NZ visa holders to accompany them as visitors.
Parent / Grandparent Visitor
Multi-entry visa up to 3 years, 6 months continuous stay; sponsorship by NZ-resident child.

Eligibility Criteria

Valid passport (≥ 3 months beyond intended departure from NZ)
Funds: NZD 1,000/month if accommodation paid, NZD 400/month if family-hosted
Onward / return ticket evidence
Acceptable health & character (chest X-ray for stays > 6 months)

- INZ 1017 Visitor Visa application form (or online equivalent)
- Two passport photos (35×45 mm)
- Last 6 months' bank statements + 3 years' ITRs
- Employment / business proof
- Travel itinerary with hotel bookings & return flight reservation
- Sponsor's INZ 1025 form + NZ residency proof + financials (for sponsored cases)
- Cover letter explaining purpose, dates, ties
- Medical certificate / chest X-ray if stay > 6 months
- Police clearance certificate if stay > 24 months
Financial Requirements
INZ requires evidence of NZD 1,000 per month (NZD 400 if hosted). For a typical 2-week trip, plan for NZD 2,500–4,000 + 3 years' ITRs.
Processing, Biometrics & Validity
75% within 20 working days, 90% within 40 working days. Add courier time for passport return.
Not currently mandatory for Indian visitor visa applicants (paper-based). Photographs and signature captured at VFS submission.
Rare — INZ may request a verification interview by phone in select cases.
Maximum 9 months stay in any 18-month period. Multiple-entry validity up to 3 years for parents/grandparents of NZ residents (with sponsorship).

Invitation Letter Rules
For sponsored cases, the NZ resident/citizen lodges Form INZ 1025 (Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry) confirming financial support, accommodation and undertaking.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is NOT mandatory but strongly recommended given high NZ healthcare costs (no reciprocal arrangement with India). ≥ NZD 50,000 coverage advisable.
