About the United Kingdom Visitor Visa
The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows Indian nationals to visit the United Kingdom for up to 6 months for tourism, family visit, business meetings, short courses (≤ 6 months) or private medical treatment.
Applications are filed online at gov.uk, followed by biometrics + document submission at a UKVCAS centre run by VFS Global. Decisions are issued by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) in Sheffield/New Delhi.
Long-term Standard Visitor Visas of 2, 5 or 10 years are available for frequent travellers — each visit still capped at 6 months.
Visa Types
Standard Visitor Visa (6 months)
Single or multiple entry — tourism, family, business, study under 6 months.
Long-Term Standard Visitor (2/5/10 years)
Multi-entry, valid 2–10 years; each visit max 6 months. Suited to repeat travellers.
Marriage / Civil Partnership Visit
Specific category for visiting UK to marry or register a civil partnership (no settlement).
Permitted Paid Engagement Visa
Up to 1 month paid work for invited experts (lecturers, examiners, artists).
Eligibility Criteria
Genuine intention to visit and leave at the end of the trip (paragraph V 4.2 of Appendix V)
Sufficient funds to cover travel, accommodation and return without working in the UK
Adequate ties to India — job, business, family, property
Credible purpose of visit with supporting documents
No adverse immigration history (overstays, deceptions)
Required Documents
- Valid passport (+ all old passports)
- UKVI online application confirmation
- 1 photo (45×35 mm, UKVI specifications)
- Last 6 months' personal bank statements (originals on bank letterhead)
- Last 3 years' ITRs + Form 16
- Employment letter with salary, position, leave approval / business documents (GST, MOA)
- Property papers, FDs, insurance policies — to demonstrate ties
- Detailed travel itinerary, hotel bookings & confirmed return flight reservation
- Cover letter explaining purpose, dates, ties & funding
- Sponsor's invitation letter + 6 months bank statements + status proof (BRP/passport) + Council Tax bill
- Marriage/birth certificates if travelling as a family
Financial Requirements
There is no published threshold, but UKVI expects you to clearly evidence funds — usually £4,000–6,000+ per adult for a 2–3 week trip. Funds should be in your name (or sponsor's) and consistent over the past 6 months.
Processing, Biometrics & Validity
Standard service: 15 working days from biometrics. Priority Service: 5 working days. Super Priority Service: 24 hours. Add courier time for passport return.
Fingerprints + photograph captured at UKVCAS appointment. Optional self-upload (SUP) of documents online or at the centre.
Personal interviews are uncommon. UKVI may invite applicants for a credibility interview in select profiles (typically by phone/video).
Standard visit: max 6 months stay. Long-term visit: 2/5/10-year multi-entry, each visit max 6 months and total UK stay should not exceed 6 months in any 12. Cannot live in UK on visit visas via frequent successive trips.
Invitation & Insurance Requirements
Invitation Letter Rules
For family/friend visits, the UK sponsor provides a signed invitation letter with their full name, address, status (BRP/citizenship), your relationship, purpose & dates, accommodation details and a financial undertaking. Attach sponsor's last 6 months' bank statements, payslips, BRP/passport copy and Council Tax bill.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is NOT mandatory for the visa, but strongly recommended (NHS care is limited for visitors). Coverage ≥ £30,000 with hospitalisation & repatriation is advisable.
