United States Visitor Visa
USA B1/B2 Visitor Visa โ DS-160 filing, interview prep & VAC support.
About the United States Visitor Visa
The B1/B2 visa is the United States non-immigrant visitor visa. B1 is for business (meetings, conferences, contract negotiations), B2 is for tourism, family visits and medical treatment, and B1/B2 combines both.
Applications are filed online via the DS-160 form on ceac.state.gov, followed by MRV fee payment, biometrics at the OFC (Offsite Facilitation Centre) and a personal interview at the US Consulate (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad).
The interview is the make-or-break stage. The Consular Officer must be convinced under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act that you have strong non-immigrant intent and will return to India.
Visa Types
B1 โ Business Visitor
Short business trips, conferences, training, contract discussions. No employment in the US.
B2 โ Tourism / Medical / Family Visit
Leisure travel, visiting relatives, attending events, medical treatment in US hospitals.
B1/B2 โ Combined
Most common โ issued for 10 years multi-entry, allowing both business and leisure trips.
Eligibility Criteria
Indian citizenship & valid passport (โฅ 6 months beyond stay)
Clear non-immigrant intent โ strong ties (job, family, property, business) anchoring you to India
Sufficient funds to cover the trip without unauthorised employment
Specific, credible purpose of travel
No history of US visa overstays, denials kept honestly disclosed
Truthful, consistent answers in DS-160 and at the consular interview
Required Documents
- Valid Indian passport (+ all old passports)
- DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
- MRV fee payment receipt (US$185)
- VAC & Consulate interview appointment letters
- 1 photo (51ร51 mm white background, US specifications)
- Last 3 years' ITRs + Form 16
- Last 6 months' bank statements (savings + salary)

- Property documents, insurance policies, fixed deposits โ to evidence ties
- Invitation letter from US host with their I-797/Green Card/passport copy + bank statements (for family visit)
- Tentative travel itinerary (do NOT pre-book non-refundable flights/hotels before approval)
- Marriage/birth certificates if travelling as a family
Financial Requirements
There is no fixed financial threshold, but plan to demonstrate roughly US$150โ250 per day of stay through bank statements, ITRs and asset documents. Funds should look stable โ sudden large deposits raise red flags.
Processing, Biometrics & Validity
Wait time depends entirely on Consulate interview slot availability โ currently a few weeks to a few months. After a successful interview, the visa is typically printed and couriered within 5โ10 working days.
10-finger biometrics are captured at the OFC visit, scheduled before the consular interview. Photograph is captured again at the consulate.
MANDATORY personal interview at the US Embassy/Consulate for ages 14โ79. Average 2โ4 minutes. Officer assesses ties, purpose and credibility. Dress formally, carry originals, answer briefly and truthfully.
B1/B2 visas for Indians are typically issued for 10 years multi-entry. Each entry allows stay up to 6 months โ final duration is decided by the CBP officer at the port of entry on Form I-94. Extensions possible via Form I-539.
Invitation & Insurance Requirements
Invitation Letter Rules
For family/friend visits, the US host (citizen / GC holder / valid visa holder) provides an invitation letter with their full name, status, address, your relationship, purpose & dates, plus a copy of their I-797/I-551/passport and last 3 months' bank statements. Form I-134 (Affidavit of Support) is optional but helpful.
Travel Insurance
Travel medical insurance is NOT mandatory for B1/B2, but strongly recommended given high US healthcare costs. Mandatory for parents visiting on extended stays โ recommend โฅ US$50,000 coverage.
